2nd Grade Music
Instructor: White, Marnie

Welcome to the Aspen Elementary School Music Website!

The AES music program engages students in a variety of musical activities which are designed to develop their musical “intelligence” while enhancing and supporting the academic curriculum. Our program is based on the Kodály music education methodology. Our program is aligned with the Colorado State music standards, and also enhances 21st century skills with critical thinking, collaboration and creativity.

Students will develop rhythmic and melodic literacy, including performing, reading and writing these concepts. They demonstrate this literacy through singing and playing instruments, developing abilities that will enable them to continue on the musical instrument (including voice) of their choice in middle school and high school. Students develop mastery of reading, writing and performing age-appropriate music in our program.

Singing is an extremely important part of the music curriculum. The Kodály philosophy believes that since we all have a voice, it should be developed as our primary instrument. All students can learn to sing in tune, in their head voice, so that everyone can be comfortable using their voice to be tuneful singers.

All children attend music class for 30 minutes every three days. Your child will be an active participant in the Colorado State Music Standards, which include singing (alone and with others), playing instruments (alone and with others), creating music, listening and evaluating music (including the correct use of vocabulary), and relating music to various historical and cultural traditions.

What does that all really mean?

Your second grade student has now become a successful rhythm reader! S/he can read and perform quarter notes, rests, eighth notes, and half notes. Click here to see the rhythm for the song "Are You Sleeping (Frere Jacques)," which your child can perform for you! We have also worked with pitch notation, using solfege syllables (sol, mi and la). Here is a song (called "We Are Playing in the Forest") your child can sing from the pitch notation. Your child also learned about the percussion family of the orchestra.

In second semester music class, we will continue to work on solfege, expanding our pitch vocabulary from three notes to five (adding do and re). We will also learn whole notes (four beat, one sound notes) and continue to practice all our rhythms.
These concepts and skills will be experienced through singing, listening, games, movement activities, small percussion instruments and storytelling. We will also be learning about the most important family in the orchestra, the string family. We will learn that the bigger an instrument is, the lower it plays, and vice versa. The kids are always very excited to see these instruments!

Students entering third grade will be considered on an individual basis. The camp will be run by professional music teachers and give the kids an opportunity to learn about vocal singing technique in a choir setting, participate in fun acting and singing activities, perform as part of a solo master class, attend open rehearsals, meet Festival guest artists, conductors, and students, as well as enjoy daily outdoor activities.

The camp will run July 28 to August 1 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Cost is just $100 for the week and each participant receives a pass to see concerts at the Music Festival as well.
